How to apologize at work without over-apologizing!!!!
KeepReap Editorial
Ways to say it
Sorry about that — fixing it now
CasualA2For small, quickly reversible errors among colleagues. The fix in the same breath is what keeps it from sounding careless.
ExampleSorry about that — wrong column in the export. Fixing it now, new file in ten minutes.
That was my mistake
NeutralB1Direct ownership without drama. Naming the cause briefly, as here, stops it becoming a longer conversation.
ExampleThat was my mistake — I read the old spec. I've corrected the estimate and flagged it to Dan.
I apologize for the disruption this caused
FormalB2For genuine impact on someone else, especially external. Reserve it — using it for a typo makes the next one meaningless.
ExampleI apologize for the disruption this caused to your release. Here is what we've changed so it cannot recur.
When not to use
Do not apologize for things that are not mistakes. "Sorry to bother you", "sorry for the long message" and "sorry, just checking" are the most common ones, and they quietly frame your ordinary work as an imposition. "Thanks for your patience" or simply nothing at all does the same social work without conceding fault you do not owe.
